A “weekender” for a family of four that serves as its primary residence away from city living.
Understanding and appreciating the complexities of a rural site was the first step in transposing the brief onto tracing paper. A site analysis quickly revealed the strengths and opportunities this approximately two hectare site. The sweet spot of the site offered commanding views of Bass Strait to the east and south, yet it sits in the path of sometimes prevailing winds to the south west. This challenge was compounded by large visual obstacles to the south. Once assembling these factors into the design equation, we were left with a composition that literally informs the reading of the building. It sets out functionality. Dialling in our signature materiality, we imbued the interior with a sense of sanctuary creating the perfect weekender all year round.
